Shropshire & North Wales. Est. 1836. A small Provincial Insurance Company that did little business outside of its base of Shrewsbury and surrounding areas. This example is of the first and very short-lived variant. Stamped in a gauge of brass too thick to readily accept the deep profiles of the die which resulted in stress cracks - as seen in all known surviving marks. Within the first year a lighter gauge sheet brass was substituted and the words & NORTH WALES inverted so that details were more readily legible from Street level. (see Wright 89A and Bulau 881 for examples. This example is one of the best seen with few stress cracks (supported at rear). Scarce mark. W89A
